What is a cannabis strain?

Cannabis is part of the flowering plant family. Some of our favorites include roses, lilacs, tulips, and, of course, cannabis.

The best way to think of cannabis strains is to think of these flower varietals. All produce flowers, but all are completely unique. They have different scents, different petal and leaf structures, and different features.

What makes each strain different?

Besides appearance (think about the sumptuous crystals on the outside of a bud), the main differences are in cannabinoids and terpenes. Typically, cannabis strains fall into three cannabinoid categories:

  • THC-dominant

  • CBD-dominant

  • Hybrid or mixed THC/CBD

Strains also vary in terpene content. This means each strain will have its own flavor and scent profile. The combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes are what create the different experiences for cannabis users.

The effects of strains

Different strains of cannabis will have different psychoactive and body effects. THC-dominant strains are for those who seek a blissful experience. CBD-dominant strains are suitable for non-psychoactive symptom relief. And hybrids offer a balance of both.

At Santa Cruz Naturals, our dispensary staff can guide you through the various strains and their effects. Alternatively, there are resources like Leafly, where you can find information on the attributes, chemical compounds, and effects of thousands of strains.
