Substance Schedules and Cannabis

“I think people need to be educated to the fact that marijuana is not a drug. Marijuana is an herb and a flower. God put it here. If He put it here and He wants it to grow, what gives the government the right to say that God is wrong?” – Willie Nelson

On Saturday, July 3, our Pajaro location was vandalized along with several other neighboring businesses. This incident was the result of an individual under the influence of a schedule 2 controlled substance.

The U.S. government assigns drugs to schedules because they believe these drugs don’t have accepted medical uses. Instead, they believe they have abuse potential and a likelihood of causing dependence.

Here’s a peek of the top 2 schedules:

  •  Schedule 1: Cannabis, heroin, LSD, peyote, quaaludes, and ecstasy

  •  Schedule 2: Oxycodone, fentanyl, morphine, opium, and methamphetamine

We call attention to these drug schedules because cannabis has been unfairly placed as a schedule 1 substance. I think we can all agree that cannabis isn’t like any of its fellow schedule 1 substances, nor schedule 2 substances. We firmly believe that it does have medical uses and has few negative side effects.

I think we can all agree that these schedules are antiquated, and we’re optimistic that change is coming. We know this because 18 states plus D.C. have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use. This wave means that the removal of cannabis from the list of schedule 1 substances is in sight. In the meantime, we’ll repair the damage done to our business, we’ll pray for the offender to find life outside schedule 2 drugs, and we’ll continue to provide cannabis knowing that it is a substance that brings healing and delight to all who consume it.
